Shopping in Athens: choose a neighbourhood, then find your keepsake

Plan shopping in Athens around markets, central retail streets, Greek design and food gifts, with practical questions to ask before buying.

Planning guide · Editorially reviewed

Decide what you want to bring home

A useful object, a gift or an afternoon spent browsing: a small brief makes shopping in Athens more enjoyable. Choose one or two areas that suit it and leave room for an unexpected find.

The central shopping districts have different purposes. The Athens Traders Association distinguishes the commercial triangle and Ermou from upmarket Kolonaki. Add Monastiraki's browsing streets and a design shop in Plaka, and you have several possible outings rather than one shopping marathon. Athens Traders Association shopping areas

Ermou and the commercial centre

Ermou is a starting point for mainstream shopping in the centre. It fits naturally into a day around Syntagma and the commercial triangle, particularly when you have something specific to find. The surrounding streets also reward a less hurried browse. Official Athens historic-centre guide

Give yourself time to try clothing and shoes. A well-chosen practical purchase can become as much a reminder of the trip as something sold as a souvenir.

Monastiraki and nearby streets

Monastiraki is a place to browse souvenirs, vintage objects and collectibles. Books, prints and ordinary decorative pieces offer different ways to take a little of the trip home. The pleasure is in comparing and choosing, rather than trying to find something at every shop. Athens Traders Association old-town guide

Look closely at condition and materials. The setting of a shop or stall does not establish an object's age, origin or authenticity.

Kolonaki for a more focused shopping trip

Kolonaki suits a browse through designer and specialist shops, with time for a café or cultural stop. A particular brand or maker can give the outing a focus, while the district provides room to explore around it. Athens Traders Association shopping areas

For a valuable purchase, the maker, construction and aftercare matter alongside the name on the label.

Look for a named maker

Forget Me Not lists its contemporary-design shop at 100 Adrianou Street in Plaka. It is a useful stop when you want to explore design-led gifts rather than buy the first souvenir you see. Forget Me Not visitor information

Museum shops offer another route into books, jewellery and clearly described reproductions. The Museum of Cycladic Art has a dedicated shop that can become part of a design-focused outing. Cycladic Shop

The shop currently directs visitors through the Stathatos Mansion entrance at Vasilissis Sofias and 1 Irodotou while the Neophytou Douka entrance is under construction. Follow its visitor notice and signage on the day.

Ceramics, sandals, textiles, jewellery and komboloi (worry beads) make very different keepsakes. Choose for the person who will use the item: a small bowl, a book or a piece of jewellery can carry the memory without taking over the suitcase.

Buy thoughtfully, without relying on a label

“Local”, “handmade” and “sustainable” invite a conversation about where an item was made, its materials and how long it will last. A piece you can repair and keep using is a more considered purchase than one chosen for a fashionable label alone.

Second-hand shopping can be part of the same approach. Spend time with the object: seams, clasps, soles and fragile surfaces tell you more than a quick glance.

Food gifts need a little extra planning

Olive oil, honey, herbs and sweets let you continue exploring Greek flavours at home. Read the producer and ingredient labels, then choose quantities you will actually use or give away.

A neighbourhood laiki brings another kind of shopping into the trip. These farmers' markets pop up weekly in different neighbourhoods, so match the day and street to the market you want to visit. Official Athens farmers' market guide

Before you buy

  • For a special trip, verify the shop's current location and hours; for clothing, establish the return terms before paying.
  • For custom or bulky purchases, agree on the design, complete cost, packing and collection or delivery arrangements.
  • Seek evidence of authenticity for valuable branded items. If an object is described as an antiquity, obtain qualified advice about provenance and taking it home.
  • Match food gifts to your storage, transport and destination rules, especially for liquids or perishables. Ask permission before photographing people or shop stock.
