YOUR ATHENS ARRIVAL

Athens airport to the city centre: choose your arrival

Metro, bus, taxi or suburban train: choose the arrival that fits your address, your bags and what comes next.

Planning guide · Editorially reviewed

Welcome to Athens. Start with the address you are heading to, rather than choosing transport in isolation. A station near your hotel, a large suitcase or a train connection can each point you towards a different arrival.

Match the journey to your destination

  • Near Syntagma or Monastiraki: compare Metro Line 3 with the X95 bus to Syntagma, then check the walk to your door.
  • Several bags or a destination away from a station: consider a taxi, with your full address and luggage needs ready.
  • An onward train from Athens (Larissis Station): look at the suburban railway and the connection you actually need.
  • Piraeus: plan for the exact port gate, station or marina. A journey to Piraeus is only part of the route to your boat.

Metro Line 3: check the airport journey

The airport's Blue Line connects with central Athens, including Syntagma and Monastiraki, and continues towards Piraeus and Dimotiko Theatro. It can suit a stay near a station when you are comfortable carrying your bags through stations and on the final walk. See AIA's public transport overview.

Check the airport-specific departures and service notices on STASY's current Line 3 page before travelling. Evening engineering works can split the route and require a connecting bus. Extended city-metro hours do not mean an all-night airport service.

X95 bus: arrive at Syntagma

The X95 links the airport with Syntagma. It is worth comparing when Syntagma suits your accommodation or when the airport Metro timetable does not fit your arrival. Check the current departure and any onward connection rather than assuming they align.

OASA says journey time varies with traffic and the time of day. Leave room for waiting and the last leg; use OASA's airport express bus guidance for current information. The X96 goes to Piraeus, a different destination from the X95.

Taxi: use the rank or your confirmed pickup

AIA places the taxi rank at Exit 3 on the Arrivals level. A taxi may suit a group with luggage or an address that would otherwise involve several changes. Have the complete destination ready and confirm space for your bags and any equipment you need.

A prebooked vehicle has its own meeting instructions; do not assume these are the taxi rank. Follow your booking confirmation and AIA's private transport guidance.

Suburban railway: consider your onward connection

The suburban railway's Piraeus route also serves Athens railway station, known as Larissis Station, where passengers can change to trains beyond Athens. This can be useful for an onward rail journey; Syntagma and Monastiraki are Metro destinations instead.

Use AIA's suburban railway summary as your starting point. Confirm current departures, the correct train and enough time for your separate connection before committing to it.

Give the whole arrival some breathing room

A late landing, baggage collection or a delay can change your plan. Check transport again when you are ready to leave the terminal. If you need step-free travel or assistance, confirm the specific stations, equipment and arrangements with the operator for your journey.

For Piraeus, check your confirmation's exact meeting pin and required arrival time. The ferry port and Marina Zeas are different destinations. Allow for the final connection and leave a sea day separate from your flight arrival.

Once your bags are down

Keep the first outing gentle: a meal, a short walk and time to settle in. Our two-day Athens city-and-sea plan helps you leave room between activities. For another day, compare Athens culture, food and cooking experiences, choosing the itinerary and meeting point that suit you.
